Having long since abandoned her shoes, she could feel the harsh gravel beneath her feet. Each pebble sent lancing pain up her legs, but she paid it no heed. She kept running, forcing her legs to propel her body forward.
"Keep running, child! By G'lah, keep running!" The hand clutching hers tightened desperately, and she lifted frightened eyes to M'shka. The old woman had been so kind to her; she, like all the others, had become a second family to her. "We cannot stop running!"
